I’ve always thought that John Donofrio was kind of a genius. I first saw his work in the 1990’s when he showed his fanciful pencil drawings of heads at a Madison gallery. The faces looked so familiar to me, like I had passed these people on the street. Only they had all come from John’s quirky imagination. And now, twenty five years later, he is a photographer. His manipulated photographs make the ordinary seem mysterious. His “Crazy Horse Mountain” hangs on my wall. Crazy Horse looks as if he could have been made from stitched burlap. His mountain stands out against a jet black sky.
What will John come up with next to delight us? I can’t wait to find out.
